T4A & tax information
How pay, tax slips and record keeping work for background performers represented by TFX.
You are an independent contractor
Background performers work as independent contractors. Toronto Film Extras is your agent — it is not your employer. You are hired and paid by the production companies you work for.
TFX does not issue T4As
Toronto Film Extras does not issue T4A forms. Sometimes a production company will issue a T4A for a performer, usually by the end of February. You may or may not receive one, depending on the production and the payroll company it uses.
If a T4A for you arrives at the TFX office, we will email you so it can be collected or forwarded.
Keep your own records
Because slips are not guaranteed, keep your own records of every booking. Retain:
- Your vouchers.
- Your Time Report Summaries (the top portion of your pay stub).
- Your commission receipts and e-transfer confirmations.
If your cheque was issued by EP Canada and you don't have your Time Report Summary, a copy can be found at my.ep.com.
Tax advice
Toronto Film Extras cannot provide tax advice. For questions about reporting self-employment income, deductions or HST, speak with a qualified accountant or tax professional, or consult the Canada Revenue Agency.
